The starter in my Mustang… (Don’t buy parts from Shucks)

The starter on my Mustang had died.  So I went down to Shucks and got a replacment starter, took it home and installed the new starter.  When I tried to turn the car over the starter would just smoke (literally).  After messing around with it for about an hour trying to get it to work and checking to make sure I didn’t do something wrong, I figured that the starter must be bad and took it back to Shucks.  They put it on their tester and sure enough, the thing was DOA (Dead On Arrival), so they gave me a new one.  I went back home and installed the “New new starter”.   I Tried to start the car, nothing, nada, zip.  So I take it back to Shucks and they put it on their tester and they tell me that the starter is good.  So I take it back home and put it in again.  Still nothing.  The little 30 minute project was turning into an all day event.   I think Dad was getting a little tired of my constant trips to Shucks in the Ford F-150 to get a “New New New starter” for the Mustang and decided to go along.  We get to Shucks and the “attendant” puts the starter on the “tester”, and turns around and says, “Yep, the starter is good, here you go!” Dad looks at the kid and asks him, “Can you test the starter under load”.  The kid says, “No, but the tester says it is good.”  Dad is getting a bit upset by now and says, “CAN YOU TEST THE STARTER UNDER LOAD?”  The kid gets a frightened deer in the headlights look and says, “No….”  Dad looks at the kid and says, “THEN GIVE US A NEW STARTER!”  Needless to say we walked out with a new starter and this one actually worked!  Still, that starter only lasted about a year before it burned out and I vowed that I would never buy parts from Shucks again.   It also taught me a couple of lessons.  #1, Dad did love me and was watching out for me.  #2 Don’t try to rip off one of Dad’s sons!!
