Our trip to Stanley

Stacia, Talon and I had a rare day off together and decided to take a road trip to Stanley. We got up and out of the house early-ish in the morning and headed out of town. We had gone to HobbyTown Convention a few weeks before and they had lent me a nice drone to evaluate for them and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some good video. Once we got into the mountains we stopped at a nice spot and I took the drone out, did the initialization procedure and then took it up and flew it out over the valley. Got some great footage and then hit the auto-land and it landed perfectly. We hopped into the car and proceeded up the road towards Stanley. We found another really cool spot to do a video, so I stopped and got the drone out. I did the initalization of the drone again. I noticed that the camera which was on a gimbal was doing something strange and decided to take the drone up anyway. What a mistake. It went up normally but once I got it over the valley it veared off. I tried to correct but there was no hope and crashed into the top of the trees about 60 feet up. To make matters worse I wasn’t 100% sure which tree it had crashed into. I could still see the camera but it wasn’t any real help. I could see that it was WAY up there but that was it. I hoped that I would be able to power it up and there would be enough of the propellers left that I could wiggle it out of the tree and at least recover the remains. I tried until the battery died but it was to no avail. Talon was down in the valley trying to locate which tree it was in. I walked down into the valley to see if I could help Talon and Stacia. Couldn’t see it. I think that even if I could see it the only way we could have got it out of the tree was shoot it out with my 9mm pistol. With my luck I would hit it and the LIPO battery would catch on fire along with the tree it was in. We decided it was a total loss. We all started back up the hill. Stacia and Talon went up another way and I went up the trail that I came down on. It was really hot out and by the time I got to the top of the hill and back to the car, I was at the point of blacking out, due to my high blood pressure and the heat. It took a good hour or so before my vision fully returned. By that time, we arrived in Stanley and had a nice hundred dollar lunch. After we finished lunch, we took a drive out to Red Fish lake. We spent about 30 minutes and then headed back into Stanley and saw the place that Stacia had worked during the summers in college. Stacia volunteered to drive back and they both had to listen to my comments that it was a really nice trip and about all the nice places we passed that I could have gotten some really cool video if I had a drone that I could do video with. Once we got home, I had to break the news to Corporate that I lost the drone. They were nice enough to not charge me for it.
