Back in the ’80s, my Dad decided to build a camper for our F-150 since we did a lot of camping and we had a family of 8. My Dad who was a pretty handy guy built the camper out of tube steel that he welded together and then attached plywood to it. It was definitely sturdy, but also weighed an almost literal ton! I remember him breaking one of the jacks while trying go get it into the truck bed! We did use it for several years before it was decommissioned.
All that being said, I was driving the truck one day (with the camper on it) and passed a few of my friends. Being the smart guy that I am, I decided to show off and do a burn out. Needless to say, I revved up the engine and popped the clutch and bang, dropped the transmission! About a half hour later, my Dad came looking for me and then helped me tow the truck back to the house (I was only about 3 block away). Needless to say he was a bit angry and disappointed about my poor decision making skills!
My Dad told me that I wasn’t allowed to drive the truck again until I paid for the repair. My older brother Layne and my Dad fixed the transmission. As luck would have it, a couple of days later I got my income tax return and paid my Mom for the parts (luckily my Dad didn’t charge me labor) and took off in the truck. On the way to where ever I was going, I managed to pass my Dad and he stopped and said, “I TOLD YOU THAT YOU WEREN’T ALLOWED TO DRIVE THE TRUCK UNTIL YOU PAID FOR THE REPAIR!”. I told him that I got my income tax return and Mom had the money. He huffed and drove off. I don’t think that punishment worked out like he wanted it to!
